Education sparks the brilliance of humanity
In the summer of 1994 in Beijing normal
university, several Tsinghua Doctoral students who were originally prepared for
their own careers, retired teachers, and university students were suddenly
attracted by the Angel laugh of children in the summer camp. That strong
attraction was the reason why they gathered and founded the Yuncol e-learning
Lab. Till 2006, they educated approximately one hundred thousand students;
furthermore, this Lab gathered more and more people and it's very probable for
them to be attracted by this career for the whole life.
At first, this Lab has a given name “Suntendy”,
finally in 1996; founders named it "YUN ZHOU"(Yuncol) by themselves.
Both of the names are “dreamlike”, which highlight the counter mainstream quality of these group. At
that time, the education market in China was focus on “test-taking” and “examine
for the certificate”, while, these people were advocating that "education
is happily social life, classroom is the stage of students”. They diverged from
the education market mainstream, so it’s easy to image how hard for them to
keep the school going, that situation can even be described as hard “struggle”.
They plans to build an “Tsinghua E-portfolio Assessment system” (TEA) later, through
this system, they advocated the Tsinghua universities’ admission offices would
accepted their concept as “class is the stage of students”. They reinvest their
whole revenue (millions of money RMB) into that project and this nearly
endangers their Lab own living.
In 2006, the summer school market suffered
a crisis and the Yuncol School faced the crisis as well: less students, less
revenue then less salary for staffs. Normally, this would cause a distressing
situation and panic, however, it literally a miracle that the staffs in Yuncol
was all in high spirit: the Yuncol Beijing winter camp re-enter rate reached a
historical high; the Yuncol Shanghai summer camp created the “Voice of Yuncol”
broadcast station. So what makes them so high? “Broadly love!” It’s the happiness when you
see children are happy studying! Now we can say that the Yuncol staffs are
special, with such a team, such spirit, such thought, the Yuncol will be never game over.
This reminds me a historical story in
China. Xueyan Hu, an extremely rich and powerful businessman in Qing dynasty
who collapsed in just one year because of too much competitors and enemies.
Though he was forced into predicament with all of his business failed, only one
herbal medicine shop named “Hu Qing Yu Tang”, which was built by Hu as a
charity agency to help the poor and the soldiers survived in his bankrupt and
keep going for hundred years. I went to Hangzhou this spring and visited the headquarters
of “Hu Qing Yu Tang” which now as a great brand. I was excited by the idea as: “ If a group devotes great love to
society; society will bring about invisible but strong power to support its
existence naturally.” Suddenly I got confidence about “as long as the spirit of Yuncol
unchanged, the Yuncol will be never game over! She will keep going for hundred
years as well!”
Yuncol is being more than ten years now and
steps into the crucial period on building the TEA system, we need to summarize
the past experiences and think what the “Yuncol broadly love” really means? After
studying the Chomsky’s language theory, I reached the core of Yuncol education.
Chomsky’s theory generally answered the Plato’s paradox: Why the information
people receive during his lifetime is so limited? But why the language is so
complex and the mind is so broad? Chomsky found the answer that is: if we
implant the linguistics by treating it as a subject to students, the best
outcome is the output equal to your input. Nevertheless when you comprehend
that the capability of language is natural instinct people evolved, and the
acquirement is to spark this unlimited instinct with limited information,
people will possess endless creativity of language. This theory is always
working with whatever language and culture contexts. I
was enlightenment: isn’t the creativity of human similar? If you only use education as stuff of scientific knowledge
to children, that is to say, studying for test and the standard answers, the
best result we can expect is like making “recorders”. Instead, when the education
arouses students’ instinct, teaching them to be physical and moral integrated
development, they will like one star twinkling in the
universe forever. Though the information they receive is still limited, they will
develop the abilities on deep thinking, broad perspective and endless
imagination. In short, the brilliant and great learning life is the insurance
of their creativity. Thus far, the logos of Yuncol can be illustrated as: Education
sparks the brilliance of humanity!
“Education
sparks the brilliance of humanity!” is Yuncol’s paean, she expresses our staff's
wish to dedicate great love by the rhythm. Surely
will merit in the process of our country's great innovation development, accompanied
by our Yuncol staff’s love achievements!
